In 1986, the VDL Groep took its first steps towards becoming an international company with the establishment of VDL Belgium NV. This was prompted by the bankruptcy of the metalworking company Denies. This company supplied many components to a major customer in the automotive industry. This customer had a strong interest in continuing production. VDL Belgium still manufactures products for this customer.
